Beauty and the Beautiful Beast: A Discussion of Gender Roles and Abusive in Twilight The main premise of Stephenie Meyer’s popular novel Twilight involves a romance between two teens: Bella Swan, who is seventeen, and Edward Cullen, who is also seventeen, but has been that age for over 100 years because he also just so happens to also be a vampire. Though their romance has been described as desirable by many who have read the book, and has even been compared to Romeo and Juliet, it has also been argued that the relationship between the two lovers is much unhealthier than it seems on the surface. Having been described as a stalker, abusive, and even a psychopath, many critics of the novel say that Edward is anything but the desirable partner, and warn that his relationship with Bella in Twilight represents outdated gender norms and may not be good for young girls to be viewing as a â€Å"normal† relationship. Despite the novel s romanticization of him, Edward is an obses sed stalker with no interests or friends other than his â€Å"family† (six other vampires) and Bella. He lures her with money, cars, and clothes—all of which she claims she does not want—to isolate her from connection with others. When she originally attended her new school, Bella had managed to make a few new friends. However, after Edward criticizes them as being â€Å"shallow,† Bella immediately cuts herself off from them.
